Back pain during pregnancy

Pregnancy creates a special need for exercise. The abdominal muscles stretch and the back muscles shorten. The center of gravity moves forward and the pregnant woman may not be aware of how to adapt to this change. Postural backache may result. This type of back pain can be alleviated by physical therapy. Body awareness techniques and toning exercises may be required.

Changes also occur at the joints of the pelvis. These changes may be due to hormone levels, weight gain, body posturing and /or an old injury that flares up because of the pregnancy. For whatever reasons, these changes do cause pain. This type of pelvic discomfort, which is felt near the buttocks or in the pubic bone, is treatable. Most women become pain free and others have a significant decrease in symptoms.

Physical Therapy Services we offer include:

  • Musculoskeletal evaluation and screening
  • Pain management utilizing modalities such as moist heat, cold, massage and /or relaxation exercises.
  • Preventative and restorative therapeutic exercise.
